Writer's Note — Maria Volkov

There's something about Auckland in February that captures New Zealand's summer mythology. I sat on Takapuna Beach at 7pm and the sun was still high, the harbor glassy, locals cracking cold beers after work. January-February is when Auckland lives outdoors: 23°C, daylight until 8:30pm, festivals every weekend. Winter (June-August) is mild but moody — 14°C, frequent rain, the city retreating into its cafés. I love November best: spring blooms, 18°C, empty beaches, and the America's Cup energy if you time it right. Māori cultural events peak summer, and that's when Auckland feels most itself.
