Writer's Note — Maria Volkov

Kolkata's tropical savanna climate produces one of the most dramatic monsoon experiences I've studied. The city receives over 1,600mm of annual rainfall, most of it between June and September. I visited during the Durga Puja festival in October, when the city emerges from the monsoon with renewed energy and comfortable temperatures. The winter months of November to February are the clear winners for comfortable sightseeing.
