Writer's Note — Maria Volkov

There's something about Madrid in May that the data can't quite capture. The city emerges from winter hibernation and the terraces fill up by 8pm — locals call it the hora del aperitivo. I sat on a plaza in Chamberí last spring and the air was 22°C with that high-altitude crispness Madrid has. August is when Madrileños flee to the coast; the city empties and the heat becomes a character of its own. September-October brings the cultural season back — opera, flamenco, the works.
