Writer's Note — David Chen

If you're planning outdoor time in Beijing, air quality matters as much as weather. I ran the Forbidden City loop in October and the air was crisp, 18°C, perfect. March-April can bring dust storms off the Gobi — gritty and unpleasant for any outdoor activity. Summer (June-August) is hot and humid with frequent thunderstorms; early morning hikes on the Great Wall are the only sane option. Winter is genuinely cold (-3°C) but the air is often clearer. The Wall at Mutianyu in late October was my best call: 14°C, golden leaves, minimal crowds, manageable UV.
