Writer's Note — David Chen

If you're planning outdoor time in Beijing, air quality matters as much as weather. I ran the Forbidden City loop in October and the air was crisp, 18°C, perfect. March-April can bring dust storms off the Gobi — gritty and unpleasant for any outdoor activity. Summer (June-August) is hot and humid with frequent thunderstorms; early morning hikes on the Great Wall are the only sane option. Winter is genuinely cold (-3°C) but the air is often clearer. The Wall at Mutianyu in late October was my best call: 14°C, golden leaves, minimal crowds, manageable UV.

Climate Insights from Our Writers

“Beijing's climate is a study in contrasts that I've analyzed extensively. The city's continental climate creates hot, humid summers and cold, dry winters, with dramatic seasonal transitions that can be challenging for visitors. The best time for a visit is clearly autumn, particularly September and October, when temperatures range from 15°C to 25°C, the skies are clearest, and the city's famous sites — the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, the Temple of Heaven — are at their most enjoyable. The data shows that summer temperatures average 30°C, but the real issue is the combination of heat, humidity, and air quality that can make outdoor activities unpleasant. The winter months are cold, with January averaging -5°C, but the air is often clearer during this period, making it a good time for photography and sightseeing. The spring months of March and April can be challenging due to the dust storms that blow in from the Gobi Desert, reducing visibility and coating the city in a fine layer of grit. I've tracked the air quality data alongside the climate data and found that the best conditions for outdoor activities occur when the wind comes from the north, bringing clean, dry air from Siberia. The rainfall is concentrated in the summer months, with July and August receiving over 150mm each, while the winter months are almost completely dry. For travelers, the clear recommendation is to visit between September and October, when the weather is most comfortable and the air quality is typically at its best. The Great Wall at Mutianyu in late October, with golden leaves, moderate temperatures, and minimal crowds, is one of the best travel experiences I can recommend based on both data and personal experience.”
