Writer's Note — Sofia Reyes

Istanbul is a city where you can wake up sweating and need a jacket by sunset. I packed for August heat once and froze on a Bosphorus ferry at 9pm. Layers are essential — even summer evenings dip to 19°C with wind off the water. Pack a scarf (useful for mosques anyway). My favorite window is late September to October: 22°C, low humidity, fewer tourists at the Hagia Sophia. Skip February — cold rain, grey skies, many outdoor cafés shuttered. April brings tulip season and the city reawakens.

Climate Insights from Our Writers

“Istanbul is a city where you can wake up sweating and need a jacket by sunset, and I've experienced this dramatic diurnal swing multiple times in my research. The city's position straddling two continents and two bodies of water — the Black Sea to the north and the Sea of Marmara to the south — creates a complex climate that defies simple categorization. The Bosphorus Strait acts as a meteorological corridor, channeling winds and creating weather patterns that can shift dramatically within a few hours. The data shows that Istanbul has a transitional climate that blends Mediterranean and continental characteristics, with hot, humid summers and cold, wet winters. August is the warmest month at 25°C, but the humidity pushes the feels-like temperature significantly higher. January is the coldest at 6°C, with frequent rain and occasional snow. What I find most fascinating is the role of the wind in shaping Istanbul's climate. The 'Poyraz' wind from the northeast brings cold, clear weather from the Black Sea, while the 'Lodos' wind from the southwest brings warm, rainy conditions. These winds can change rapidly, creating the dramatic weather shifts I've experienced. The best time for a visit is late September through October, when temperatures are around 20°C, the humidity has dropped, and the summer crowds have thinned. The spring months of April and May are also excellent, with comfortable temperatures and the city's famous tulips in bloom. The rainfall is distributed fairly evenly throughout the year, with December and January being the wettest months at around 100mm each. For travelers, I recommend packing layers regardless of the season, carrying a scarf for both cultural visits to mosques and protection from the wind, and planning activities that take advantage of the city's unique position as a bridge between climates and continents.”
