Writer's Note — Maria Volkov

There's something about Oslo in winter that feels like the city is performing for itself. I arrived in February expecting gloom and found magic: 50cm of snow, 4 hours of daylight, and the Holmenkollen ski jump lit up against the dark sky. Norwegians don't hibernate — they ski to work, light candles everywhere, and embrace kos, their version of coziness. Summer (June-August) is its opposite: 22°C, 18 hours of light, the fjord dotted with boats. May 17 (Constitution Day) is when the city bursts into bunader and parades. Each season here is a deliberate cultural choice.

Climate Insights from Our Writers

“Oslo's position at the northern end of the Oslo Fjord creates a climate that's surprisingly mild for its latitude. The data shows that July averages 18°C, while January averages -4°C, with the moderating influence of the Gulf Stream keeping temperatures warmer than inland locations at the same latitude. The best time for a visit is June through August, when the temperatures are warmest, the days are longest, and the city's outdoor attractions — the fjord, the forests, the parks — are at their most accessible. The data shows that July is the warmest month at 18°C, with long daylight hours that make it possible to explore the city and its surroundings until late in the evening. The winter months are cold and dark, but the city has embraced its climate with a thriving indoor culture and outdoor winter activities that make the most of the snow. The Holmenkollen ski jump, the city's most famous landmark, is a testament to the Norwegian embrace of winter. The city's position at the head of the fjord creates a microclimate that can differ significantly from the surrounding region, with the water moderating temperatures and creating wind patterns that affect the city's weather. The rainfall is moderate, with Oslo receiving about 800mm annually, distributed fairly evenly throughout the year. For travelers, Oslo offers a climate that rewards those who embrace the seasons — summer for the endless days and outdoor activities, winter for the snow sports and cozy atmosphere, and the shoulder seasons for the beautiful transitions that define the Norwegian experience.”
